Bedfolk vs House Babylon

Cutting out the middleman

Ever wondered how House Babylon really compares against Bedfolk Bedding? This is our no-holds-barred comparison of the two companies that were both created to bring luxury bedding to you without the middleman.

To make sure these comparisons are as fair as possible, we looked at their features and compared against ours. We're so passionate about the quality of our bedding that we felt quietly confident that the comparison would show how much better it is. We're not going to add in lots of features that are meaningless, we're as straight-talking about our comparison as we are about our bedding. We won’t let this review sit stagnant when either Bedfolk or we reveal new features - we'll update it as these changes are announced so that you can feel confident this page is accurate.

1. Certified 100% Egyptian Cotton

Writing ‘100% cotton’ is actually the same diverting marketing concept as ‘100% juice’. The juice may well be cold pressed and half the bottle might contain sugar. In the same way, unless your linen bedding packaging says it is 100% Egyptian cotton and states that the linen ranges between 300-700 thread count, it isn’t the real thing. Put it down, walk away and buy better.

Bedfolk don't use 100% Egyptian cotton in their bedding.
House Babylon only uses 100% Egyptian cotton...and we always will.

2. Made in Egypt

Real Egyptian cotton actually accounts for less than 1% of the world's cotton production and therefore it is twice as expensive as other types of cotton. So, if you find an offer for a 600 thread count, 100% Egyptian cotton bedding set that costs less than £100, it probably isn’t real Egyptian cotton. As the saying goes, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true.

Bedfolk make their bedding in Portugal.
House Babylon makes all of our bedding in Egypt...and we always will.

3. Thread count

The simplest way to understand the thread count of Egyptian cotton is by imagining a long thread and a short one with many split ends. The long Egyptian threads can be woven into a square inch between 1 and 800 times (hence 800 thread counts).

When we say 600 thread count we mean 300 vertical threads woven into 300 horizontal threads.

Other retailers use multi-ply yarn, that has been created by twisting together three yarns of inferior quality, and then artificially inflate the thread count by triple. So when they say 600 thread count, they mean 100 vertical multi-ply threads, woven into 100 horizontal multiply threads.

Bedfolk only use 300 thread count.
House Babylon use 300 and 600 thread count.

4. Oeko-Tex Certified

Oeko-Tex certification means your bedding has been made without the use of harmful chemicals at any stage of the manufacturing process. Many companies use bleach and dyes which are harmful to the planet, but there are many other options for dyes, which we use for our bedding.

If your bed-sheets state ‘wrinkle free’ this is likely to have been treated with formaldehyde resin, a toxic chemical.

Bedfolk is Oeko-Tex Certified.
House Babylon is Oeko-Text Certified.

5. No harmful chemicals

Not all bedding is Oeko-Tex Certified, but still does not contain harmful chemicals.  We wanted to include this section for those companies we compare against who are not certified but are chemical-free.

Bedfolk does not contain harmful chemicals.
House Babylon
does not contain harmful chemicals.

6. Monogramming

Nothing beats the sophistication of a delicate monogram hand-sewn on to 100% Egyptian Cotton. For over 100 years Savile Row tailors have been sending shirts to Hand & Lock’s central London Embroidery studio for the finest hand monogramming. Now you can bring this luxurious symbol to your own bedroom. Monogramming also makes the perfect personalised gift for friends and family.

Bedfolk does not offer monogramming.
House Babylon
offers monogramming on all orders. Just add monogramming to your basket.

7. Duvet & Pillow Sets

A bedding brand that doesn't sell duvets and pillows? That doesn't make sense to us. You can't use one without the other so it made sense to us to offer bedding sets to our customers. The Move-In Set includes one down and feather duvet of your choice, two down and feather pillows, one duvet cover, and two pillowcases from our Excellence or Classic collections.

Bedfolk does not offer duvets or pillows.
House Babylon
offers duvets, pillows and sets. Find them in our shop.
